UNPOPULAR OPINION: IF TRUMP HAD WON IN 2020, WE MIGHT BE IN A BETTER PLACE
This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion among my Democrat friends. Still, looking back on the past year, I’ve concluded that the best-case scenario for the country might have been Donald Trump winning the 2020 election.
If Trump had won, like he still claims to this day, there probably wouldn’t be this revenge-tour version of Trump we’re dealing with now, complete with a cabinet full of incompetent yes men and women.
Almost everything Trump has done during this administration feels geared toward owning the libs, firing up his base, and widening the divide in this country.
And honestly? There’s probably a good chance we wouldn’t be watching ICE terrorize neighborhoods like some wannabe Gestapo. There’s a good chance we wouldn’t be dealing with these tariffs. There’s a good chance we wouldn’t be forced to sit here and watch RFK Jr. make our country look stupid every time he gets behind a microphone, and we probably wouldn’t have to deal with Pete Hegseth’s smug face while reading reports about war plans getting tossed around in a Signal chat like it’s no big deal. Hell, we probably wouldn’t have to look at JD Vance’s face every time we open the news, either.
Let’s also add the age factor. If Trump had won in 2020, he would’ve been 78 at the end of his presidency, rather than taking over again at 78 for another four years. You can talk about “Sleepy Joe” all you want, but there’s no way you can watch what’s unfolding every day and honestly say Trump is mentally capable of holding the highest office in the free world.
A Trump win in 2020 would’ve at least kept things on a steadier course, with him still surrounded by some level of competent staff, and there’s a decent chance MAGA would’ve started to fade in 2024, when a new Republican tried to take the White House and carve out their own path.
I get how unpopular this take is, especially given how unpopular Trump is outside of his dwindling hardcore MAGA cult, but honestly, I would’ve rather had four years of semi-normalcy than four years of chaos.
