I’M NOT READY FOR THE WINTER OLYMPICS TO BE OVER

I’m not sure which Olympic Games are the most popular, but for me, the Winter Games have always been my favorite, and always will be.

From curling to all the sledding sports to skiing, there’s just something about watching these events unfold in places that are often small towns, basically in someone’s backyard.

And this year? The 2026 Winter Olympics wrapped up with a hockey game I’ll be talking about for the next two months as the United States beat Canada 2–1 in overtime, with unreal goaltending from both teams.

My excitement went from the sky to the floor real quick, though, because right after that I had the same thought I always do:

That’s it. It’s over, and just like that, most of us will not give a fuck about curling for another four years.

For the past two weeks, I’ve relied on the Olympics being there for me as something to throw on the TV.

There’s something about grabbing a blanket, curling up on the sofa, and watching a bunch of events you’d normally give zero fucks about, and then suddenly you’re invested. You’re rooting not only for your country but also for athletes from all over the world—people whose stories hit you in ways you didn’t expect.

From triple axels in figure skating, to throwing the perfect weight in curling, to sticking a landing in aerial skiing… to overtime goals… to watching someone go face-first down ice at close to 80 miles per hour. I’m sorry, but the Summer Games have nothing on the Winter Games.

When the Summer Olympics roll around, we’re usually busy. It’s warm out, there’s stuff happening, and margaritas to be drunk on a patio somewhere.

But the Winter Games? They land at the perfect time. In the winter months, when there’s not much going on in much of the country, the Winter Games become the focal point of your entertainment for 15 days.

Honestly, one of the best things the IOC ever did was stagger the Summer and Winter Olympics so we get them every two years instead of all at once (that shift is why we had Winter Games in 1992 and 1994).

I’ll definitely tune in for the LA Summer Games in 2028, but I’m already going to miss the Winter Olympics.
