GET MARRIED AT McDONALD’S. WHO GIVES A SHIT?

A few weeks ago I saw a story about a couple who got married at a McDonald’s. They both worked there, and judging by the pictures, they seemed pretty damn happy.

Unfortunately, the comments on social media were not very supportive, and it got me thinking about what we actually mean when we call somebody “trash,” because I’ve used that word plenty of times, but to me, being trash has absolutely nothing to do with how much money you have.

It’s not the clothes you wear. It’s not the car you drive. It’s not whether you live in a $230,000 house or a single-wide, and it’s not whether your wedding reception is catered by a 4-star restaurant at a country club or serves guests a 20-piece McNugget.

Trash is behavior.

If I see you smoking in your car, I don’t care. That’s your business and your lungs, but if there’s a baby strapped into the back seat breathing it in? Yeah, now I’m judging you and calling you trash.

Throw the cigarette butt out the window when you’re done? Now I’m judging you and calling you trash.

Treat a waitress like shit because your Caesar salad took too long to come out? Trash.

Leave garbage all over a park when you go to see fireworks on the 4th of July because somebody else will clean it up? Trash.

But two people getting married at McDonald’s? Who the hell are they hurting, and that’s the part I think we’ve lost somewhere along the way.

We spend way too much time judging other people simply because they aren’t living their lives the way we live ours, but I think there’s another side to it, too, as we spend way too much time worrying about being judged ourselves.

Seriously, think about how many decisions we make based on what somebody else might think.

Who gives a shit? Live your life for yourself. Make yourself happy.

It’s simple. Don’t treat people like shit. Don’t be a douche, but beyond that? Why are we letting a bunch of people who aren’t living our lives decide how we should live them?

Would I get married at McDonald’s?

No.

But here’s the important part: It’s not my fucking wedding.

These two worked at McDonald’s. Maybe that place meant something to them. Maybe it’s where they met. Maybe it’s where they fell in love, or maybe they looked at their bank account and did the smart thing rather than putting themselves in debt so other people can have fun on your dime.

If that’s the case, they might be smarter than half the people making fun of them, and all the while they looked happy.

Isn’t that supposed to be the whole fucking point?

You get one life, and it’s way too fucking short to spend half of it judging how everybody else lives theirs and the other half worrying about how everybody is judging yours.

If two people can sit underneath the Golden Arches, look at each other and genuinely think, this is exactly where I want to be, then maybe they’ve figured out something the people laughing at them haven’t.

They’re living their life, and maybe the rest of us should spend a little more time living ours.
